Road Tax
Well it seems that now the DVLA are sending out ÂŁ80 fines for people who have vehicles registered to them if those vehicles do not have road tax and have not sent in an SORN (Statutory Off Road Notice). Is this just a scheme for employing extra bureaucrats? Why don't they just do the sensible thing and apply road tax to petrol? That way you don't have to worry about cheaters because there can't be any! It is automatically an environmental tax, use more petrol - pay more tax. Instead of giving people a tax disc every year when they show their insurance certificate and MOT to the lady at the Post Office and get ripped off for the Road Fund License, the Post Office can issue MOT / Insurance discs.
The cost to the public purse of employing all those extra people to check on administering the road tax scheme goes away completely and we are left with a fairer, cheaper, better system.

Asylum
Irked as ever about the 'Asylum Issue', I am completely unable to fathom the attitude of Amnesty, amongst others who recently complained about the number of Asylum cases that are refused and subsequently accepted on appeal.

Where are these people coming from? Rumania, Albania, Iraq? No, not really, the majority are coming from France, by ferry, plane and tunnel. They are not seeking the protection of a friendly state as they were already in one before expressing a personal preference to move to England and it is, let's face it England where they are going. The Scottish Prime Minister of Great Britain Tony Blair who presides over a government that has a disproportionate number of Scottish, Irish and Welsh MPs, from places that already have their own governments doesn't seem to be taking the issue seriously.

So what should we do about it? Well number one, refuse entry and asylum for anyone who has not traveled directly from a country wherein they are persecuted or in fear of persecution. So, OK to catch a ship from Sierra Leone, not ok to catch the P&O from Calais. Secondly refuse entry to anyone who is not bearing a passport that has traveled from a country and with a means that would have required them to have a passport at the start of their journey, so once again, sail boat from Columbia, fine. Off the plane from Frankfurt, left the passport under the seat not fine.

Finally, anyone that has traveled directly from a country where they are in fear of their life or safety, without passing through a safe haven should be welcomed with open arms into the system.
